Russia unit cuts ties to church

     By Globe Staff, 02/24/96

MOSCOW - The Russian Orthodox Church suspended relations yesterday with
its mother church in Turkey, blaming it for a "tragic division of
orthodoxy." A long-simmering conflict boiled over Thursday when the
Orthodox Church of Constantinople, based in Turkey, threw its support
behind a group despised by Russian church officials. The Greek-language
Constantinople church formalized its support of the Estonian Orthodox
Church by taking over a branch that broke away from the Russians.
