Washington November 9th, 1892.

Hon. John W. Foster,

Secretary of State,

Sir:

I have the honor to apply to Your kind mediation in the hope of obtaining, as far as possible, for the Greek-Orthodox Most Revernd Bishop Nicolas of Alaska, a favorable answer to his following applications to the Government of the United States.

1. To be allowed to use, on the same conditions as the Bishops of other rites, the war-ships of the Government of the United States for his travels in more distant parts and Islands of Alaska, — the steamers which he is otherwise obliged to use for such travels being not only without and comfort, but very unsafe.

Accept, Sir, the renrwed assurance of my highest consideration.

Baron G. Schilling.
