100th Anniversary Celebration: Sunday, October 18th, 2009 - 1:30 p.m.
Holy Trinity Cathedral in San Francisco celebrated the centennial of the cathedral building on October 17-18, 2009. In 1909, three years after the great earthquake, the cathedral was moved to the present site from its former site on Powell and Columbus. Since then, it has been a spiritual lighthouse on the west coast, shining a brilliant beacon of Truth to anyone seeking God, the Church and salvation.
Father John Takahashi, Dean of the cathedral, began the celebration on the evening of the 16th, by serving a panikhida for Matushka Barbara Sokolov, commemorating the first year of her falling asleep. Vespers followed. On Saturday morning, the celebration began by greeting the Hierarchs, His Grace Bishop BENJAMIN, Bishop of San Francisco and the West, and His Grace ALEJO, Bishop of Mexico City and the Exarch of Mexico, at the door of the cathedral.
Frank Morelli offered bread and salt with words of greetings. After the priests greeted them, His Grace, Bishop ALEJO, was vested in the center of the cathedral. The participating priests were Frs. Ian Mackinnon, Chancellor of the Diocese of the West, John Takahashi, Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Leo Arrowsmith, Basil Rhodes, Matthew Tate, Sergious Gerken, Silas Ruark, Bazyl Kalinowski, Hermogen Holste, George Gulin, George Washburn, David Lowell, Damian Kuolt, Andrey Kovalev, Joane Kavsadge.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, Bishop BENJAMIN presented gifts to the guest hierarchs, Bishop ALEJO and Bishop ANDRES, who was visiting San Francisco from Guatemala. Bishop BENJAMIN also presented a grammota to Father John Takahashi, Dean, who received it on behalf of the Parish Council and all the faithful of Holy Trinity Cathedral. The grammota was given to Holy Trinity Cathedral from the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America to commemorate the centennial celebration.
The celebration banquet was held at Fishermen’s Grotto No. 9 at Fisherman’s Wharf following the Divine Liturgy. Following the opening prayer, Master of Ceremonies, Subdeacon Johann Morse, welcomed everyone to the celebration. After the meal was served, each of the hierarchs gave a speech. Father Ian Mackinnon, Chancellor of the Diocese, emphasized the historical importance of Holy Trinity Cathedral in his speech. At the end of the banquet, Father John Takahashi thanked everyone for coming to the celebration.
On Sunday, October 18th, both the cafeteria and the upper room were filled with people after the Divine Liturgy. The table of ethnic pot luck lunch was plentiful with the food everyone brought for the celebration. The potluck was one of the “themes” of the celebration on the second day. The first part of the event in the afternoon was a slide presentation of the “Beginning of Orthodoxy in San Francisco” by Lydia and Dima Zaverukah. Their presentation showed that Holy Trinity Cathedral had been the center of Orthodoxy in San Francisco. The second part was presented by Patrick Smith, a choir member at the cathedral, and his friend Tim Hagan Their singing concluded the centennial celebration of the Holy Trinity Cathedral building in a joyful mood.
Father John Takahashi, Dean, and the Parish Council of the cathedral would like to thank their rector, His Grace Bishop BENJAMIN, Bishop of San Francisco and the West, for guiding them through the preparation for the centennial celebration. They also would like to express their gratitude to all of the volunteers and participants for their help. They also thank the clergy, their families, and faithful from the Bay Area and the Diocese of the West for joining the celebration. May God grant them all many years!

Choir Master Robert A. Parent's 30th Anniversary
On Sunday, July 8, following the hierarchical Divine Liturgy, celebrate by His Grace Bishop Benjamin, we will honor our amazing and much loved choir director, and celebrate his thirty years of service and dedication to Holy Trinity Cathedral.
Director and composer, translator and arranger, Bob Parent has contributed so much to the beauty of the liturgical life of Holy Trinity Cathedral over the past three decades. Bob's joyful and unique style brings a special focus and energy to the services. His thorough knowledge and understanding of the intricacies of liturgical order make even the most complex hierarchical or festal service seems effortless under his direction.
Bob's musical talents are appreciated by all of us and by the many visitors that pass through our doors. Bob's choir is one of the many reasons that Holy Trinity Cathedral is a destination for traveling Orthodox Christians from around the country.
Bob's active involvement in parish life, his sense of humor, and his personal warmth, all contribute to the family-like character of our cathedral community. With great joy we celebrate this memorable anniversary, and with love we give thanks to God for the blessing of Bob Parent.
