His Examination on the Libel Charge Begun Before Judge Rix.

The examination of Bishop Vladimir of the Russian Church on a charge of having caused the publication of a criminal libel concerning Dr. N. Russell was commenced yesterday before Judge Rix.

A few weeks ago there was published an article based on letters Dr. Russell claimed to have received from St. Petersburg relative to the recall of the Bishop. In a subsequent interview Bishop Vladimir declared to a reporter that the letters were forgeries, and on that the libel charge is based by Russell.

The case is attracting considerable attention among the Russians here, and the same audience that listened to the trial of charges of cruelty to the pupils in the Russian Church School before Judge Worley were yesterday in attendance. The excitement was intensified by the report several days ago that the Grand Jury intends investigating the local branch of the Russian Church.

The publication of the interview complained of was proven, and Eugene Hahn testified to its correctness.

Dr. Russell testified that the letters he had previously exhibited were genuine, and further hearing was adjourned until to-morrow.
